When JE Dunn Construction took on the challenge of expanding the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport’s concourse, it embarked on a journey filled with excitement, innovation, and community spirit. This project isn’t just another job—it’s a shining example of what can be achieved through teamwork, resilience, and forward-thinking.
Awarded in 2019, this was JE Dunn’s first ground-up concourse expansion, marking a shift from their usual renovation projects. Despite the setback caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which paused construction, the team came back stronger in 2021, and the 10-gate concourse opened to passengers on September 16, 2024.
The pandemic pause could have been a major roadblock, but JE Dunn’s team used this time wisely. They didn’t sit back; instead, they refined their plans and budgets, ensuring they were ready to jump back into action. As Nick Christoffersen put it, “We were in lockstep, revising budgets during COVID, so when we got the green light, we hit the ground running.”
One of the standout strategies was the proactive approach to procurement. With inflation and supply chain issues looming, the team decided to order materials well in advance and even rented warehouse space to store them. This smart move kept costs within 1% of the original budget—a remarkable feat given the economic challenges.
What really made this project special was the collaboration between JE Dunn and its partners. From our joint venture with McFarland Construction to the relationship with the airport’s administration, the design team, and trade partners was seamless. “It’s one of those projects that everyone at the end of it would say, ‘Hey, I would definitely do that again with each other,'” said Christoffersen, highlighting the strong bond formed during the project.
A young, energetic team comprised of JE Dunn’s aviation group and local Charlotte office employees played a crucial role. Christoffersen even relocated from Atlanta to Charlotte, bringing a fresh perspective and a commitment to excellence. Their hard work and dedication were key to overcoming the challenges and delivering a successful project.
Beyond the construction site, JE Dunn’s impact on the community has been heartwarming. Partnering with local nonprofit Carolina Breast Friends, the team started what was initially a small initiative to wear pink shirts in October. This evolved into a significant fundraiser, raising $55,000 over two years. Such efforts not only fostered team spirit but also strengthened ties with the local community.
JE Dunn also supported local events and tournaments organized by the airport, showing up and participating wholeheartedly. These activities underscore the company’s commitment to being more than just builders—they’re community partners.
Leading up to and upon completion of the project, there’s been a palpable sense of pride and excitement. This project showcases JE Dunn’s dedicated team of proven airport builders are committed to delivering an exceptional experience in the communities where we live.
The Charlotte airport concourse expansion is a testament to what can be achieved with strategic planning, collaboration, and a lot of heart. It’s a story of turning challenges into triumphs and making a meaningful impact on the community.
JE Dunn Construction has once again proven that its projects are more than just construction—they’re about building legacies.
