Urban Youth Academy

JE Dunn Construction’s engagement with the Urban Youth Academy in Kansas City exemplifies the company’s unwavering dedication to community development and philanthropy. The project, now a cornerstone of the 18th and Vine District, commenced in an unconventional and memorable manner, highlighting its significance and the deep connections it fosters within the local community.

The Urban Youth Academy project kicked off with a unique groundbreaking event known as “Relay the Way.” This involved a community-wide relay in which participants passed a baseball from Union Station all the way to the site of the future Academy. This event, which brought together local residents, including JE Dunn employees and their families, highlighted the community-centric approach from the very beginning. The relay culminated in a ceremony where notable figures, such as baseball legend George Brett and then Mayor of Kansas City Sly James, played catch with participants, setting a celebratory and collaborative tone for the project.

One of the most distinctive aspects of JE Dunn’s involvement was the company’s decision to donate its services as a charitable contribution. This was a significant gesture, reflecting the company’s commitment to giving back to the community. Scott Sherry noted that even Bill Dunn Sr. was involved in this decision, underlining the project’s personal connection and importance for the company’s leadership.

The personal connections didn’t stop there. Mr. Dunn had a unique history with the site, having pitched on the very field that would be transformed into the Urban Youth Academy. This personal tie added a layer of sentimental value and dedication to the project, making it more than just a professional endeavor.

The timing of the project’s completion coincided with the Kansas City Royals’ World Series run, which added to the overall excitement and community spirit. The Royals, particularly then-General Manager Dayton Moore, were deeply involved in the project. Moore’s dedication was evident as he frequently visited the site, offering support and guidance. His commitment was so profound that he even used the facility as his office for a time, reinforcing the idea that the Academy was more than just a building; it was a symbol of community and opportunity.

The collaboration with Populous, the project’s architect, also played a significant role in the project’s success. Their longstanding relationship with the Royals ensured a smooth and harmonious partnership. The Academy’s design incorporated elements that connected it to the Royals, such as having the same infield dimensions as Kauffman Stadium, adding a nostalgic and inspirational touch for the young people using the facility.

The Urban Youth Academy serves multiple purposes beyond its primary function as a sports facility. It provides a space for local youth to engage in baseball and softball activities without any cost, fostering an inclusive environment for athletic and personal development. Additionally, the Academy was utilized by UMKC for their home softball games, further embedding it into the community’s fabric.

A standout feature of the project is the mural on the south side, commissioned by a local artist, which adds an artistic and cultural dimension to the facility. This mural, painted on-site and later installed, reflects the community’s identity and the project’s broader aim to support arts alongside athletics.

Moreover, the project included practical and thoughtful design elements, such as state-of-the-art turf fields to maximize usability and minimize weather-related cancellations, and a rubberized walking track to promote health and wellness. These features ensure that the Academy serves as a versatile and accessible community resource.

The Urban Youth Academy has undoubtedly become a catalyst for revitalizing the 18th and Vine District, sparking renewed interest and investment in the area. Through JE Dunn’s dedication, personal connections, and collaborative efforts, the project has not only provided a top-tier athletic facility but also reinvigorated community spirit and engagement, leaving a legacy in Kansas City.
